Day one: White Springs to Woods Ferry
We began near White Springs at the US 41 bridge and headed downstream toward Woods Ferry River Camp. The recorded route for that first day was 11.6 miles, nearly five hours of moving time. It was a good introduction to the rhythm of the trip: paddle for a while, drift and look around, pull over to investigate something interesting, and then continue downstream.
The Suwannee is never simply one long, straight channel. It twists constantly, with every bend revealing another limestone wall, broad sandbar, shaded bank, or tree leaning out over the water. Even on the first day, it was obvious that this would be much more than a trip from one campsite to another.
