Massachusetts Watershed Associations

Local watershed groups are some of the best places to learn about the rivers and streams around us, get involved in conservation, follow water quality, and find people who care about the same places we do.

What is a watershed?

A watershed is the entire area of land that drains to a common outlet—a stream, river, lake, wetland, estuary, or ocean. Rain and snowmelt move downhill across the land and through soils, wetlands, tributaries, and groundwater systems, eventually becoming part of the same connected drainage network.

That means a river is much more than the water between its banks. Its condition reflects what happens throughout the surrounding landscape: forests, farms, neighborhoods, roads, wetlands, parking lots, groundwater recharge areas, and upstream communities.

Think upstream and downstream. What happens on land in one town can affect water quality, streamflow, flooding, habitat, and recreation many miles away. Watershed boundaries make ecological sense even when political boundaries do not.

Why watersheds matter

Healthy watersheds help provide clean drinking water, support fish and wildlife, recharge groundwater, moderate floods, store carbon, protect wetlands, and create places for paddling, fishing, swimming, hiking, birding, and simply enjoying a river. Protecting a river therefore means protecting the land and water systems that feed it.

Watershed organizations are especially important because they work at the scale of the river itself. Many combine water-quality monitoring, streamflow work, habitat restoration, land protection, public education, advocacy, volunteer cleanups, and recreational access. They also connect residents with scientists, municipalities, conservation commissions, state agencies, and federal programs.

For Massachusetts, this watershed-scale approach is increasingly important as communities deal with development, polluted stormwater, aging sewer infrastructure, drought and low-flow periods, habitat fragmentation, invasive species, flooding, and more intense rainfall. A healthy watershed is both an ecological resource and part of a community's natural infrastructure.

A page with a little history

This page began in December 1998, when watershed associations were building some of their first websites and river information on the Internet was scattered across universities, early state-agency pages, and small volunteer-group sites. Many of those original addresses are long gone, but the underlying idea is still just as important: learn your watershed, know your river, and support the people working to protect it.

Some of the organizations have changed names, broadened their missions, or moved to new websites. Where an original organization evolved into a successor group, this page now links to the current organization or the closest active watershed resource.
